ELA Strategies
Search around your house for objects that begin with each letter of the alphabet. Can you find all 26 letters?
Read a storybook to your child and discuss characters, setting, problem, solution
Listen to a story. What was your favorite part? Retell the story to your family - you can even act it out!
Read a learn about the world book. Discuss what they already know about the topic before reading. During and after reading, discuss what your child has learned.
Log on to Reading A to Z (Razkids) and read 2 books. Answer the 5 reading comprehension questions after you read. Or read 2 of your own books and have your parent ask you questions about what you read.
Have your child read a book to you.
Practice Snap Words - Read them, play games with them, find them in a book, write them
Write the alphabet - circle the vowels in red
Practice the sounds letters make
Make a list of rhyming words - use endings at, it, ut, am, in, un, et, ug, an, ot
Use magazines to circle snap words, circle vowels
Find a book or magazine. Can you find the digraphs ch, th, wh, or sh? Write down the words that you found. Then try to read them!
Create a story by using illustrations, labels and writing a sentence - stretch out the words, check that each word has a vowel, read the story to someone
Practice learning the calendar with your parents or a sibling. What day is it? What month is it? What year is it?
Math Strategies
Count and write numbers 0-20 (use objects to practice one to one match)
Add and subtract two groups of objects within 10 and write a number sentence
Go on a 2D and 3D shape search around your house. Which shapes did you find?
Make a recipe and discuss measurement
Take a walk around the house and compare sizes using words such as heavier, lighter, taller, shorter, the same as, or different
Compare two groups of objects and describe them using more than, fewer than, or the same as
